I am very excited about this project!
My person I am doing this project on has really amazed me! The person I am doing is Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy, also know as "Dr. V". Dr. V is a cataract surgeon in India. He recived his medical degree from Stanley Medical College in Chennai. He now works at Aravind Eye Hospital. Within his first year of performing cataract surgeries he performed 5,000 surgeries. 70% of his patients pay very little or close to nothing for him to do their surgery. Literlly hundreds of thousands have been granted a gift of sight. Over in India Dr. V's surgeries cost around $10.00 compared to about $1,650.00 here in the United States. With the money Dr. V has invested he has been able to open five other Aravind Eye Hostpitals in India that are just rented houses that have 11 beds in them. The one thing that really amazed me was this quote that Dr. V says inspired him to perform cataract surgeries on people."If McDonalds can sell millions of burgers, and COCO-Cola can sell millions of sodas. Why can't I sell millions of sight restoring operations?"

I really like my person, Robert L. Bernstein. He was an editor for a couple different publishers, like Random House. He was really outspoken, and brave. He founded Human Rights Watch, which was a foundation for the protection of human rights. He got banned from a international book fair in Moscow, but I am not sure why. I think it was because he was so outspoken. He was the reason that the Beijhing couldn't hold the Olympic Games in 2000, because they were abusive towards their people! I couldn't imagine protesting a country, I would be worried that their secret service would hunt me down or something. Mr. Bernstein passed away, but his legacy still lives on! Yale has a Robert L. Bernstein Followers Organization, but I am not exactly sure what it was. I think ernstein went to Yale...? But this guy really amazes me with how outspoken he was! It would be really hard for a lot of people to get up and protest a country. He must have been really passionate!

I don't know everything there is to know about Nelson Mandela yet... but he's very fascinating, especially because he endured many many many, etc, etc, years of prison. After he got out, he just kept on going after his goal which was to end the apartheid.
My person is amazing!!
Desmond Tutu fought for racism government problems in Africa. He is so smart that he would take the words of others and turn them against them easily. Such as, he said to some United States officials that they call themselves big Christians and upholders of God's law but they will not treat blacks equally. Aren't we all God's children? When he speaks his words drip with knowledge and are very convincing. He traveled all over Europe and Africa speaking. He was appointed Archbishop of Cape Totwn. Right now he is gathering funds for the many helpless people suffering in Africa with AIDS and HIVS. Something I thought was really funny was his accent, I was listening to a speech and his accent is sooooo cool!!! lol

The person i'm researching is Shirin Ebadi. Wow, this woman was amazing. i havent found out every single thing about her, but what i do know is truely amazing. Shirin Ebadi was the first femal Iranian justice to have served as a judge, but there was a problem, because the beliefs of her home living place, they didnt believe in female judges. so her and her female coworkers got kicked out of their positions and were given clerical duies. They made her work as a clerk at the court. and as we all know, unhappy people lead to riots, so obviously they protested. all they got in return was a promotion as "experts" in the Justice Department. she was so mad, she put in a request for early retirement, that's how bad the situation was. there's a whole bunch more but youre just going to have to wait until i present!
my hero is Mimi Silbert i love how she is so generous and helpful to all of those criminal. what i think is wierd is that sheis in a place full of criminals any of which could hurt her. I have also looked it up and it says that the foundation pays for 85% of its own bills what pays for the rest. it says that she never accepts government grants so where does the extra money come from. if you want to learn more than you just have to wait.
My hero is Dina Abdel Wahab. I think she is a very cool person because she created a school for special needs children. She started the school all because her son was born with special needs. She is now opening more schools. I think that she has done a great thing.
